Before & After

How does Spray Tanning Work?

Skin is made up of two main layers: the epidermis on the outside and the dermis on the inside. Whether you are talking about sun tanning or self-tanning, the epidermis is where the action occurs. The epidermis is also made up of layers. The deepest layer of the epidermis, called the stratum basale (basal layer), is affected during sun tanning. The stratum corneum (horny layer) is the outermost layer of the epidermis -- it is this layer that is affected by the tanning solution.

There are several different kinds of sunless-tanning products available today. People have been able to pour on a tan since 1960, when "Coppertone" came out with the first sunless-tanning product -- "QT" or Quick Tanning Lotion. If you are old enough to remember this, then you are probably thinking of the incredibly orange hue this lotion produced.

Since then, there have been several advancements made on the sunless-tanning front. The most effective products available are sunless- or self-tanning lotions that contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as the active ingredient (American Academy of Dermatology). Although DHA is present in these lotions it is in minimal quantities.

Types of Applications
There a variety of ways to apply self tanner today. We will discuss a few of them to help familiarize you with the different methods and why some are better than others.

Hand Application
Self-tanning lotions are for home use. Trying to apply a full body coat is very time consuming and can get messy if not done properly. The lotion usually has much weaker concentration of DHA and takes more applications to achieve the desired results. It will contain Alcohol to assist in the drying process, but also dries out your skin! Not to mention the pungent odour associated with these products

Spray bottles
Hand held spray bottles make application a bit easier but produces a large amount of overspray. This method is great for touch ups and small areas but not cost effective for full body. One caution for home use is overspray coating flooring and furniture. You must apply the solution where you won’t ruin your valuable flooring and furniture.

Automatic Spray booths
Spray booths are the largest selling spray vehicle today. We often hear 'Mystic' and 'Magic' tan when people call us for spray tanning. They have been around for several years and are improving. They are the least labour for salons and that alone is one the biggest reasons for their popularity. The application allows for a much better solution than hand-applied lotions, however, booths are also the most inefficient at delivering solution. On average, about 70% of the solution is washed down the drain, leaving 30% on the customer. Usually the salon will teach it’s customers to towel off after to take care of any runs and streaks, this too removes product diminishing your results.

Fantasy Spray Tan Airbrush
Airbrush tanning produces the most effective results. If done with the proper equipment and trained technique it far exceeds the efficiency of the auto-spray booth and place 90% of the solution on you and only 10% will be exhausted into the tanning booth.

With Fantasy Spray Tan, our technician will apply the solution for you in about 10 minutes. This is more efficient than a sixty-second booth and the results are 200% better.

Please note: Most salons offering airbrush today use older conventional airbrush systems due to cost or lack of knowledge. They use a smaller pen size spray gun and take upto 40 minutes to apply!

Most people do not like to have to stand there for that length of time, although some like the results. Some people get a false sense of quality thinking it has to be better if it takes so long.

We use the latest technology on the market which give you the best results in the least amount of time. We utilize High Volume/Low Pressure equipment delivering the fastest, most even tan with the least amount of over-spray.

Airbrush tanning may be a little more expensive per session than going in a spray booth; however, you definitely won’t need as many sessions to get the results you seek. It is much better value.

The main ingredient in Solglo is Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) which has been used in the cosmetic industry for over 30 years! DHA is made from sugar and does not contain any potential harmful chemicals. It does not contain alcohol, which has a drying effect on the skin, unlike many self tanning products currently on the market. The solution contains Aloe Vera which is a skin softener and Vitamin E, therefore it is actually beneficial to the skin!

As the sugar interacts with the dead skin cells, a colour change occurs. This change usually lasts about five to seven days from the initial application.
